I was yelling in my car after getting the email while eating a Butter Jack cause of excitement. I’ve been looking for so long, and while its still considered poverty wage in some areas ($27,000 starting) this is my first legit-real-big boy job. Its Customer Support for an online banking startup in Cali.

Now that I can actually pay rent and then have play money, I seriously want to widen my New Edge mustang. I gotta sit down.

You’re actually almost 300% over the poverty line if it’s just yourself. $20k more and you’ll be making the median income.

Well done fella. But pace yourself. Set some money aside and if it’s not needed for bills by the time of the next wage, then spent it on the car.

Again, congrats.

Congrats. Build up a savings of at least 6 months of expenses before spending money. It sucks when there's something you really want but you'll feel so much better when you look at a bank statement with padding instead of $50. I suggest putting it in a separate account from your normal checking so you're less likely to spend.

Congrats! Remember to set aside 3-6 months of full living expenses.

Truth! Aso, when emergencies or all types happen, and they will, you have money to help, or get you by.

Congrats man! :) Never hurts to be able to pay your bills....I still live at home because I haven’t found a full-time job to support an apartment yet....substitute teaching isn’t always terrible reliable day-to-day...pretty sad!

Waiting to hear back from a $32,000 CDN a year job I applied to at a Museum, so crossing fingers!

I remember the #Joblopnik conversation we had a little while back and I’m happy you have a job! I think I said I was just starting or had started my current job, but since then I got a permanent role and more money.

Good Joblopnik feels all round.

What? Dude...you’re a duck who wears rare 70s fashion items and gets around on a dinosaur. How are you gonna tell us that saving is more important when you wear your cash on your sleeve!?

I can do that now that I have savings to fall back on. Dinosaurs can be expensive to maintain. If I have a slow month selling my 8 tracks I have a cushion to fall back on.

Not to be Debbie downer but depending on where you’re at in California, its probably not far from the realistic poverty line.

Here is the good news for you though. I started in banking back in ‘03 with no degree and making $9 an hour part time. In less than 5 years I was making over $70k. I’m not telling you this to brag because that’s not exactly a king’s ransom, but banks have a lot of potential places make money. I was lucky and in the right places at the right time but if you work hard and make the right decisions, you could easily double your income in a few years or less. The fact that you’re at a start up means you probably have even higher potential for promotion. Bust your ass and you’ll do well.

Yeah obviously, you’re not going to count Tim Cook and the Kardashians as your neighbors with only $27k post tax income, but lets not pretend that you’re sitting on the doorstep of homelessness there if you’re only providing for yourself. Not being able to afford the absolute best places to live at is a far cry from not being able to afford to live anywhere at all in the United States.

Yeah. I’m not sure what it means, but it’s an interesting number.

$27k post tax is a lot more than $27k pre tax, and in some places that would go a lot further than California. From what I gathered from the first post though is that we are talking about California.

I’m not trying to rain on any parades here by any means; the point I was trying to make is that, from my experiences, a bank is a great place to start off with a lot of potential for promotion.
